Craig Lawrence's autumn/winter 2012-13 journey started with the idea of travel – the concept of retro luxury versus modern-day budget, specifically.
"I started with memories of taking coach trips to visit friends in Liverpool, contrasted with the glamour of Fifties airlines” the knitwear designer told us after the show. “I wanted to combine the sophistication and conservative style of hostess silhouettes with the more pretty elements of the coach – the patterns of the seat – and look at the difference between the high luxury at one end with the chintzy-ness of the other."
And who knew that coach seating could inspire such elegant results. Anyone who ever took a school bus will feel instantly nostalgic for the metallic copper, earthy brown and orange palette that Lawrence’s starting point informed, crafted into neat cropped jumpers and slinky pencil skirts referencing the aforementioned seats in their geometric patterns.
Fit-and-flare dresses in the same woodland hues were teamed with Manolo Blahnik Mary Janes – provided especially for the show – while an ongoing relationship with the Swarovski Collective added a touch of sparkle to the collection, with delicate slip dresses spun in crystal yarn and embellished with twinkling Swarovski Elements.
